Mysore Style
Mysore refers to the city in India where Pattabhi Jois lived and taught for several decades. The Mysore Style is the traditional way of learning Ashtanga yoga which allows one-on-one instruction from the teacher. In this class, each student practices at his/her own pace by following their breath independently of the rest of the group. The teacher is present to help the student with verbal indications or postural adjustments if necessary and to provide support. It is an autonomous practice that requires to take a step back from the habits of having a teacher guiding the class. It allows the teaching to be adapted to the needs of the each student according to the specificities of their body and their practice. All levels of practice and experience are welcome.
When taking the first steps in Mysore class, the recommandation is that students commit at least one or two weeks to start to learn the sequence and fully immerse in the practice.
Led class
This is a guided class where the teacher sets the rhythm of the practice by stating out loud the vinyasa count, the name of each posture, the breathing phases and the drishthi associated. Everyone practices at the same time and at the same pace like a symphony. The count is the main component of this class aiming at setting rhythm. Led classes are recommended to practitioners who already experienced few Mysore classes and have an overview of what the primary series look like.
Historically, this class was only given during Pattabhi Jois trips abroad to reaffirm the method and the vinyasa count. Nowadays there are two led classes and four Mysore classes per week at the Sharath Yoga Center (SYC).
Modern Ashtanga Guided class
This a class that you probably experienced in western countries where the teachers follows the sequence by guiding the class while giving more explanation about the alignment of the postures and breathing techniques. It can include mini workshops in the class. All levels are welcome.
Breathwork
The breathwork class is a conscious breathing session that allows you to release tension, calm the mind and connect with yourself. Through different guided breathing techniques, you will learn to use your breath to balance your energy, soothe stress and promote mental clarity. Each session is an inner journey to explore your breathing, release blocked emotions, and find a deep sense of well-being. Whether you are a beginner or an advanced practitioner, breathwork offers you a powerful tool to recenter and revitalize your body and mind.
